Tourist For a Day!
Today is May 3, and I set out on the mission to see if I pass as a tourist in my own city of San Juan. I planned the day and decided to wear shorts, a printed t-shirt, and a baseball cap. I set my mind to go walk Old San Juan with American cousin. It was channeling to set my mind to only talk English once I arrived. My cousin luckily has a rented car, so it was a plus on the tourist experience. We decided to walk to get to the Morro:
and for there we continued south of old San Juan to the restaurants. We stopped and ask for directions constantly because I was set out to see Old San Juan as viewing it new, with no previous knowledge. While walking we stopped to ask for recommendations for a restaurant, to my surprise some of the people didn’t know English or just plain ignored us. Luckily we found a couple that recommended us to the restaurant Raices and gave us directions to arrive. Upon arriving at the restaurant, I met up with some family friends and as a test, they sat in a separate table to us and they were going to order normally in Spanish and me and my cousin I in English. We ordered the same food with some minor change in compliments and I noticed our food arrived very fast and my family friends arrived like 20 to 30 minutes later. I noticed also they give more attention to the people that appear like tourists than the local. After finishing I went to the “Paseo of Princesa”:
It was very interesting trying to experience the known places through the eye of a tourist. Although I spend the whole day as a tourist, I knew I didn’t get to see it all, but as always Puerto Rico is very beautiful and is a universal island that brings happiness to all that visit.
Hi Sergio. My reaction to reading your blog was that I was very surprised. The fact that your family in the other table and you ordered the same food yet your food arrived way faster seems very suspicious. Loved the post!
ReplyDeleteHi!!! Very good post. So are you saying that us locals will treat tourists better than puertorricans? If so, I got the same experience when I visited Isabela and honestly, I don't even know why, it really surprise me.
ReplyDeleteHi Sergio! I liked your post! Also, just out of curiosity, did you enjoy the food at Raíces, or do you prefer genuine Puerto Rican cuisine (such as your family members' meals?)
ReplyDeleteThe food in Raíces was very good, but hands down I will prefer my family's meals, specially in Christmas :D , Genuine Homemade Puerto Rican food is very good and special.
DeleteI am hungry right now thanks to you. Nothing beats the homemade stuff. Raices can never compare to grandmas cooking. Entertaining stuff dude! Keep on writing!
